Spring practice is still over a month away from getting started, but it's never too early to spark a debate on who will be taking the snaps come August 30th. Last season it was mostly a two horse race between Arizona State transfer Sam Keller and junior Joe Ganz. It's up in the air as to how close the race actually was. I for one tend to believe that Ganz was actually closer to Keller than you think.My theory is that when you look back at the '07 season you can't help but notice that the offense responded positively to Ganz and reacted so poorly to Keller as the season drug on. Player support doesn't count for much when the head coach is feeling the pressure of staring a quarterback who transferred to play for one year and seemingly had the tools to help us contend for the Big 12. Ganz may not have had the NFL-type physical tools as Keller, but as you saw in the last few games in '07 he does possess a better than average understanding of offensive coordinator Shawn Watson's offense.
This year may be a tad more complicated when coming to naming a starter. The popular choice from the fans will no doubt be the incumbent Ganz, however he will be facing strong competition from players that will hopefully be able to step up and give him a healthy run for his money.
Leading the charge will be Zac Lee. Lee is a junior college (JUCO) transfer from San Francisco
City College and was the top rated JUCO QB player on 2007's signing day. Lee has three years of eligibility after sitting last year with an injury and picking up a red shirt. Lee is a bit more of your prototypical quarterback. He stands 6'2" and at 210 pounds he has a cannon for an arm but it is tempered with accuracy. He also has the ability to go mobile if it is needed or even called for by Watson. If he can't wrestle the starting job away from Ganz, I personally expect him to be the starter for the 2009 squad.
Next in line would be sophomore (next year) Patrick Witt. Witt played his high school football under the bright lights of Wylie (Texas) High School. Witt is also your typical QB in stature standing 6'4" and weighing in at 220 pounds. Witt was signed by the Callahan staff as their first true attempt at having a four year quarterback in their mold of what a player at that position should be. Well, other than players like Harrison Beck who flamed out and transferred to North Carolina State. But I digress. He has a big arm but last season did show great all-around ability to distribute the ball and make quick decisions. He's probably still a little raw, but keep an eye out for him in the next year or two.Two names you can't rule out is Beau Davis and incoming freshmen Kody Spano who is already on campus and will be practicing with the team come springtime. Spano may red shirt which would prevent him from seeing any playing time in '08, but his presence will add to the amount of competition among would be signal callers.

I do not think Zac Lee will start a Div 1 game. For starters, for
those of you who say he has not seen a field yet, you are
wrong he played JUCO and there is game film. Watch it, he
is not mobile, his accuracy is suspect, his decision making
is mediocre. But he does have one helluva rocket for an arm.
When The former regime recruited him, they recruited him to
replace keller if ganz did not pan out, because they had no
patience for development.
Again he is a JUCO kid, kind of like semi pro, if they were
good enough to be called pro there would not be a preempted
semi in front of it, furthermore (and beleive me it happens
alot) his ratings were skewed by his lineage.
I also dont have a whole lot of faith in the up and coming
of Patrick Witt, he is smart, probably makes good decisions,
but again the rankings system suck, because no one knew who
he was until nebraska signed him then suddenly he goes from
unranked to 18th in QB, and i am the first to say that
rankings dont matter, but do you know why he wasnt ranked,
because he never got to play a down of throwem football
until his senior year. He was recruited and ranked based on
practice, and his senior year in HS was slightly better than
Mediocre.
More and more you will see the pocket passer get passed by
in DIV 1, the spread offense has picked up steam and
everyone is looking for Steve Young, this years #1
ballyhooed prospect is a duel threat. Kidy Spano has
probably the best shot at being a 4 year starter out of all
the candidates going to various teams this year, 1 year of
Redshirt and then off he goes, he is smart, mobile, agile,
and can throw too.
These are just my opinions and you are entiled to be enraged
by them, but I will be standing there (again) to throw the
big ol Humility Pie in your face when I am right. And if I
am wrong, I ensure you I will take that pie in my own face.
No worries sir. Differing opinions are always welcome. You're right, I could be very wrong and still stuck in Bill Callahan mode. The truth is most people don't know what to expect out of the new regime. I don't think the new staff even knows what to expect or what the three or four year plan will be.
If you're right and Spano (who I'm excited for) red shirts and starts four years beginning in '09 and is successful along with the entire team, I'll eat my "Humility Pie" and ask for seconds.
